Periodontal disease, also known as gum disease, is an oral condition that begins as a bacterial infection in your gum tissues. If allowed to progress, it can destroy your gums and supporting bone structure. The best way to prevent periodontal disease is to practice good oral hygiene at home. This includes brushing your teeth at least twice each day, flossing daily, and visiting the dentist at least twice each year for a routine dental cleaning and exam.

There are also factors that may increase your risk of gum disease, including:

  • Smoking or using other tobacco products
  • Poor oral hygiene
  • Pregnancy
  • Systemic health conditions (diabetes, heart disease, osteoporosis, etc.)
  • A family history of gum disease

Common symptoms of periodontal disease include:

  • Red, swollen or tender gums
  • Bleeding while brushing, flossing or eating
  • Gum recession
  • Loose or separating teeth
  • Sores in the mouth
  • Changes in the fit of oral appliances or your bite
  • Persistent bad breath
  • Pus between your gums and teeth

We strongly encourage you to continue to practice good oral hygiene at home and visit Dr. Thornley regularly. At each visit, we will check your mouth for gum disease and make recommendations for ways that you can keep your mouth healthy.
